The Color Rangefinder is an integrated optical sensor that combines RGB color detection with proximity measurement in a single compact module. It uses photodiodes to capture light across the red, green, blue, and infrared (IR) spectrum, providing accurate color data. The proximity sensor operates by emitting an IR laser and measuring the amount of reflected light to calculate the distance to nearby objects.
A high speed microcontroller onboard manages real-time conversion of RGB data into hue and brightness values, and also linearizes proximity sensor readings down to sub-millimeter precision using pre-calibrated constants. The microcontroller then outputs that data based on the stored configuration, for example by checking the data against lower and upper thresholds.
